Watertight

Its been a while since i have updated this as its been a busy time on the lorry build.

We managed to get it watertight and make it to the Landrover show at Newark.

It was great to meet some of you there, even though the weather was a bit dodgy and there was another show on the same weekend it was still an excellent do.

Padded cell

Managed to finish the insulation (well Simon did), he felt like he was in a padded cell and looked quite 'mad' after cutting all the squares out. Thanks to Festool circular saws it didnt send him completly crazy. We have used a 40mm foam insulation a bit like 'Extrem' only coniderably cheaper. Good to work with and should have excellent insulation properties.

We have started to clad the interior with MDF, so it can be painted easliy. We have got one window in. Still waiting on one of the windows to arive from Dometic, a bit of a nightmare really, nearly 2 months since i ordered them.  3 of the 4 windows landed 2 weeks ago, the other one has vanished !

The airstream effect

Not an 'Airstream', but an 'Airblocker'...

Got the exterior finished and now its onto the guts..

Horse box

Its looking a bit like a horse box now..

The windows have finally arrived so we managed to get the cut outs done. Nearly cut one the wrong size. Measure twice / cut once. Or measure wrong twice, cut bigger hole once. Fortunatly we noticed before we started the jig saw up !

Burger van

If anyone else asks for a burger or some chips i will scream, besides whch you would need a large chair to stand on in order to be served.. soon it will look more mobile home than burger van.. i hope..

The air riveter is paying off, makes like much easier.

Solar furnace

Cladding the roof in the sun was not a good idea ! We had to take the truck out of the shed to be able to do the roof but man was it hot ! A little bit like a solar oven ...

Got the roof done and did some bendimg of the Aly for the rear overhang.

Grand Designs

Tagged in: Truck Build

Its a bit like the truck version of grand designs, i keep expecting Kevin to walk around the corner going " will it work? there is so much to do in such a short time, will it fall off the back in Mongolia?". Other similarities are the budget is blown away, the work load has doubled and the 'moving in' date has slipped, but hey ho we are building a house on wheels !

We have managed to clad the back of the box, most of the roof and are onto the front behind the cab. Steve the welder came back last night and did some more frame work as we have now  worked out the exact locations for the windows. Just need them to arrive now- their delivery date has changed as well.

The floor is in

After days of collecting materials and working things out we have managed to get the floor done.  We have extended the origional bed upto the cab and lengthened it at the back, so our internal space is now 4m x2m x2m.

We have put battons down on the origional floor with space for the insulation ,this is then covered in 12mm ply, onto which we can build everything else.

Start of MAN camper conversion

After our trip around Scotland and our subsequent travel plans we have decided to re-build the camper on the back of the 'Overlander' lorry.

With ideas swirling around my head for nearly 20 years its quite strange to at last be building an expedition camper. I have read lots of books and been on countless websites so now its time to put it all together. Due to the timeframe for our departure we have had to keep things simple, no time for experimenting with GFK panels, or finding someone to build such a thing. Its going to be a steel box clad with aluminuim and a basic interior.

After our  trip around scotland-(see trip reports), the criteria for an extended trip were
