Mission accomplished!

Set off from Edinburgh at 8am Saturday, clouds in the sky but the moody looking cloud off to the east, kind of out of harms way. Nice tail/cross wind. Few spots of rain in Kielder forest but otherwise a good but hard days riding. We had 183 miles and 14,500 feet of ascent. The reward for such efforts was a bivi bag under a hedge in a field outside Ripon

Next morning up at 5.30 and away by six. Knowing that we'd also need to make up the 20 mile deficit from the day before. 220 miles in a day? No pressure!
I was knackered from the previous day and it just didn't seem possible to find anything more but as the day rolled on and the food went in so I perked up and Ian, my riding partner, is a strong rider and I sat on his wheel quite a lot which really helped. At first we didn't seem to be getting south fast enough but when we got clear of a Diwali festival in Leicester we finally managed to get the gas on and it was just like a manic two up time trial. Looking down and seeing 20,22 and 25mph on the computer just seemed wrong on a 200 mile day but we eat into the miles. With London not so far off I needed fuel so we stopped for pizza in Milton Keynes and shortly after leaving MK, Ian's gear cable snapped for the rear mech. I luckily had a spare but it became apparent that fishing the end out of the shifters was going to be a time consuming waste of valuable time and with most of the climbing done Ian elected to lock the rear mech off and ride with just two gears. Much respect!
We got to Buckingham Palace at 11pm. Unfortunately licensing laws say no alcohol sales after 10.30pm so there were no celebratory beers to be had. However 222 miles in a day was a good reward. 9,500 ascent
I slept on the floor at his office and then set off after a breakfast at 8am for home in Kent. London traffic just needs to be seen to be believed at rush hour! By far the scariest bit of the trip. A real slow plod today and another 66 miles and 3000' of ascent to get me home. I did pop in to work this afternoon but no heavy lifting or even thinking today was possible!

Total mileage 471 miles.

What is next?
