Good article peeps, gets me thinking....

I also have a "truck" satnav, but have long since turned this off and just use the "car" setting.

I also break my route up or set way-points, but maybe I should try and perform this more elegantly, as Steve says, it can be blooming time consuming!

I do find that most of the time I am out, I don't actually have a destination as such, just somewhere to point towards, then work it out as I drive.... ie. if I see something that may be interesting, I go there, plus I am a massive advocate of just bumbling along!

If on a "proper" journey, I use the Garmin, but I also have a tablet fitted to a movable mount which then runs AlpineQuest. I zoom out to give me a bigger picture of where I actually am, but when I get near somewhere interesting I zoom in for details of possible tracks to follow... works quite well and got me around some ridiculously small roads and tracks whilst in Scotland for a month or so, so seems to be OK for most of my driving.

I think, for me anyway, that maybe there is no single solution for my needs, as it varies depending on where I am and what I am trying to achieve... so still looking for the holy grail....

I do also carry a large scale paper map along with a trucking type of detailed road atlas, as you never know then Mr USA will turn the sat's off, or they get nicked by space pikies and sold for scrap!

"Space Pikies" I almost lost a mouthful of hot coffee at that!
Seriously though, a good point - use tech but don't be 100% reliant on it

A Truck mode thought:-
Most truck drivers would not be happy if the route generated in truck mode had any bumble element!
