GPS - Delorme - Spot

Postby sparks101 » Mon Jun 18, 2018 7:45 pm

Guys,

just your thoughts on this subject. Has anyone given any thought to the SOS type GPS receivers/transmitters ?
Seems to me the two main one appear to be Delorme (Now Garmin) and Spot. Delorme being more expensive to buy, but the plan is cheaper and the Spot vice versa.

The Delorme looks better (InReach explorer plus) in that it can be used as a general GPS with Garmin mapping system.

Questions:
Do we actually need it?
Are we that far from civilisation?
Is mobile coverage adequate around the world?
If you press the SOS will you get a response anywhere ?
Is there a better idea? e.g Sat phone.

Any thoughts welcome

Cheers, Andy

We have used the latest SPOT device in our travels throughout SA, Bots, Moz, Zim, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Namibia, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda.

My Kids bought one so we could keep them updated and they could trace our travels

Easy to use, however its tracing and reporting was often quite unreliable. Sending an update every day, which we agreed to do and did, would not always arrive, and the tracing was often missed and had gaps in position in most of those countries.

That caused real anxiety with my Kids as they thought something had happened to us as there was no report for days at a time, despite the SPOT confirming it had been sent.

After three weeks, they stopped looking at the reports as they were so unreliable.
Not sure I'd rely on the SOS function as a result.

Eventually reverted to the SAT phone to update them.

Have no experience with Delorme and that may well be more reliable.

We have the delorme inreach and have used it loads of tomes to send messages. It works brilliantly.

Never used it as a navigator. There are much better devices out there.

Great for the family to track us.

Lots of places with mo signal for long periods

Yeah.

If you get one , when you activate it at garmin you will be offered their special deal on GEOS search and rescue.

Don't take it as you cannot add Mandy onto it via them.

If you want the GEOS package go straight to them as they offer different packages.

I have been watching a vblog about a chap in the USofA that lives in his Jeep, and excellent vblog by the way, and he uses one of the Inreach devices and seems to love it.

Just thought I would mention it.....

Hi Andy and Mandy, you have both been a bit quiet recently, I thought you may have both been working.... then I thought, nah, not you two!

Hi Bri, been really busy at work and Mandy has me flat out on the house. Still all coming along :D
Back to working on truck now so should be on here more often.

Looking at it I think the inreach explorer plus is going to be selected. Seems to do everything i want and can use it as a normal walking GPS.

cheers

Glad you are both OK, but "busy at work" naaaa.... don't believe you for one minute!

Good to see Mandy has got you working though! Good girl Mandy!

I saw a video about a chap that has just bought an Inreach unit, but he did not go too much into the setting up and use of it but it does look to be a nice bit of kit so I for one will be interested to hear about it when you get one.

Maybe at the AO show in a few months?

DC Rainmaker has a rep for really solid reviews and his reviews and advice have always been spot on for sports stuff I've bought. He tells it as it is and doesn't just re-write manufacturers' hype like most journos do.

Though sports stuff is his thing, he still makes for highly recommended reading and in the below he refers to full size inReach devices as well as comparisons to Spot:
