Re: Down Rating

I have started looking around for different tyres for the rear axle since the axle is rated at 4240KG I need a tyre for a load of 2120KG per wheel .....looking around one of the few tyres I can see, that will fit my rims, is a michelin 255/100R16 with a load rating of 134J. Which equates to 2120KG per wheel at 100KPH.
My question is does the truck have to have a speed limiter set at 100KPH to use these tyres legally, it is unlikely to go over 100KPH anyway unless its gone over a cliff!!
But I don want to spend a lot of money on new tyres and have it fail its plating test.

Grey area but seemingly a pretty unequivocal MoT fail unless vehicle speed can be shown to be restricted.

I had a read of the HGV inspection manual and it says you can run tyres with a J speed rating (62mph) on unrestricted vehicles but there is a 7% reduction in the axle load rating. Which in my case will still gives a rear axle weight of 3950KG, which will be OK
