different wheels.

Postby Steve » Sat Jul 06, 2019 7:39 pm

I would really appreciate an in depth conversation with those that have good knowledge regarding changing the wheels. 2 things are key. 1)I need to have full snowflake tyres for Austria. 2) I have some serious reservations about changing the tyres on my rims at the moment. all reprts I have are that this could be a life ending experience!
help appreciated.

Hi Steve, unfortunately this forum is in a transition period atm, the owner is selling it, so there is not as much activity as there once was! We are working on it very hard!

I say we..... I am not, not that clever, but others are!

So first things first.... Welcome!

I would be useful to know what vehicle you are asking about, also what type of rims. When you say wheels, are you talking about the rims, the tyres, or both?

If you have concerns about split-rims, then don't, there is way too much scaremongering going on out there, fit them properly and all will be well, do not and all hell will open!

So if you could update this thread we can go from there.

Brian.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the response.
Vehicle is Leyland Daf 45/150
I want to change the rims and tyres. The rims so that I can buy much cheaper commercial standard tyres - ones with the snowflake (legal requirement for Austria).

I understand what you are saying about do them right and they are OK - I would still prefer to get more modern easier ones to do on my own.

I have seen some stuff about new rims being made - but the tyres are slightly bigger...not been able to see much telling me how successful or not the change has been.

The gap between my backbox and the tyre is only 4 inches.

Oh, name change..... I take it you are with Steve?

Thanks Gina, if you are NOT talking about the T244 then I can't help you on specifics as it is the only vehicle I have a little knowledge about, sorry about that.

Some people call the T244 (4x4 ex Military truck) the 45/150 and it confused the life out of me when I started!

There are people that have has wheels made but I do not know how good/bad they were. One company I remember was called "Aspect Wheels" but no idea if they were successful...

I will be having a meet-up with our very own Crinkly-Steve (AKA The Haynes Manual Writer) later today, so will mention it to him as he knows everything!

Good luck both,

B.

Aspect wheels is right, I had a set made to my dimensions.
It's up to you to check clearances etc., remembering to allow for chains etc.
There are plenty of on line charts that will allow you to check rolling circumferences etc between diferent tyre sizes

Just my two penneth. I assume we are talking the T244 rims.

Changing the wheels on the standard rims is very easy when you get the knack. Took me best part of a day with the first one, now I could have a tyre off and a new one on in about an hour. Very straight forward and non life threatening. Did it by myself although two would make it easier.
I think there are different types of the sprung split rim, ours seem fine.

Have fun, changing the tyre size is a bit of a minefield.

Cheers
