First Test

Postby TimberwolfII » Fri Dec 22, 2017 12:16 pm

Last week i toddled up to Carlisle for my first engagement with the dear DVSA.

All went swimmingly (I got there!) until I was asked to pull onto the rollers and put it in 2WD......

Blank looks when I said no can do. Phone call later tester states it will need a Tapley Tester and this AFT isn't authorised for one of them sorry. So, i got a full re-imbursement (Carlisle Volvo are a lovely bunch) and was on my way with the knowledge that Longtown 'may' be able to do a Tapley.

Spoke to the Longtown crew and a very nice chap said 'has it got a centre diff?' check by jacking up a wheel and seeing if it will spin (it does). Then we can test one wheel at a time and happy days....

Next attempt is next Thursday so we will discover the next installment in the saga!

Oh, don't the T244 sound nice climbing a hill!? Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!

Interesting.... Not sure what a Tapley test is but I am sure I did not have one when I got mine tested with the DVLA....

If it is the brake test, then I had to thrash mine up to 25mph (iirc) and hit the brakes as hard as I could to lock the wheel up!

I was not at all happy doing this, and had to do it about 3 times!

They then had a box in the foot well that took "G" readings I suppose.... it passed but I left a bit of rubber on the track, not to mention the cabin contents re distributed in the back....

Good luck on the second attempt.

Box in the footwell is the Tapley Meter apparently. No where got one or authorised round here. They've shut most of the ministry sites and operate out of big truck garages now which you hire for the privilege.....

Tester also said I needed simulated load weight. On further research DVSA site says 65% of GVW so it's got two dumpies of sand on the back, talking to delivery driver at builders merchant he said as long as you have summut they're usually happy and don't weigh you.

So I sort of got a freebie heads up on a few issues, fingers crossed for Thursday. Biggest unknown is the fog lights....

Sooo, we have moseied on to the 'First Registration' chapter of a long running saga...

We have the first MOT. The weighting plates (it's still a 7.5t HGV at this point) were sent to somewhere other than my home address by the DVSA (fairly common apparently, can be agent, or testing station.. ) are now with me too. So we can register it for a V5! (?)

Well.....

You have to do a V55/5 for one of those, old school on paper. With lots of supporting evidence. Including a Certificate of Conformity.

CofC unavailable for T244.... Which doesn't seem to be an issue - "fill out as much as possible and we'll have a look"

What IS an issue is a non original (photocopied) MOD form 654 the 'Application for Disposal of a Cast Vehicle'. This needs to be an original...

So via Withams who were very helpful said ring the Defence Equipment Sales Authority (DESA) . They give you a letter as evidence of dating for the vehicle which is what DVLA want the 654 for. £25 the lighter that should be coming soon.....

Moral is, be like me, don't have any preconceived ideas of how long all this might take (two months and counting) and don't set any absolute deadlines!! enjoy the ride!

Blimey Mate, why is it all so difficult for all of us!!!!!

This is not rocket science, not the first time it has been done either....

Pigs me off...

Good luck with it all, sounds like they are making it up as they go along as usual!
