More Russian stuff- UAZ 452 "Loaf"

Postby Zoltan » Tue Mar 26, 2013 10:16 pm

I bought this little beauty not very long ago because I like them. It will get the classic VW treatment of a sink and hob and cupboards down the side and a rock and roll bed across the back. In it's previous life it was used by the Finnish army as a radio van hence the steel bulkhead across the back and the roof rack. They very kindly insulated it and fitted a petrol space heater similar to an Eberspacher Airtronic

What is it?

A Russian UAZ 452. Hundreds of thousands of them in Russia and the other Eastern block satellite states, it is *the* utility van, minibus, military radio van etc etc. All exceedingly simple, 4 cyl 2.4 petrol on a carb and distributor, 2wd/4wd, hi-lo ratio, free wheeling hubs. bomb proof mechanicals and very quirky looks :D

Fantastic!
Is it just me or does it look like a Comma Van?

I think the Uaz designers had seen pictures of the Commer van for sure, or the other way round. It's a great little van to drive round in :D

Saw dozens in use in Ukraine (along with loads of old Russian trucks) most were in the same green colour and seemed to be in public utility service.

Some were private though, including this one snapped from the cab.
