hilix surf

Postby jamest » Wed Feb 18, 2015 2:36 pm

Thoughts on these for a bit of weekend fun but also for a weekly trek cross country on the motorway. 120miles each way.

Looks like they can be had pretty cheap and I like the look of the early 90 versions...

Seems more around than a cheap cruiser...

Haven't had a lot to do with them but driven a few. Comfy, nice enough on the road but even the 2.4 seemed quite heavy on fuel for what it was (my 2.4 hilux pickup was high 20's - surf more like low 20's).

2.4 auto not exactly startling performance but not bad once up to crusing speed.

2.4's seem to suffer with cracked heads too (the top hose will be very, very hard when running if nothing else obvious)

3L Manual was fun to drive, but even more thirsty again, but did I mention really really fun

Not seen so many about recently, but the odd ones I have are starting to look quite rusty now - if they're owt like the Pickup chassis, then there's not a lot of steel there to start with so have a good prod

Seem to remember the rear windows were a bit temperamntal - you can't open the tailgate on the earliest ones without winding the top window down so it's important it works off the button!

Thanks for the info. As I need to head into London I need to find one that not only isn't rusty as hell, but also LEZ complient. There seem to be a few around that are, but scattered around the country :(
