Confused about tires...???

Postby Jamin_cruiser » Wed Sep 18, 2013 10:07 am

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and to overlanding. I have a 70 series landcruiser that I was planning to slowly turn into an overlander but due to some unexpected life changes My fiance, 6 month old son and I have decided to head to Morocco for a month or so and explore the Atlas Mountains. We're planning on leaving in October.

The truck is an LJ78 (yes the one with the rubbish engine - although ours has been trouble free so far...) and the tires on it are 31x10x15. I was thinking of replacing the existing alloys with steel modulars and going for the BFG all terrain tires, but I'm a little confused about which size to go for.

The truck has uprated suspension with a 2" lift and so there is stacks of room for a large tire, and the ones on there now do look a little lost - BUT the main thing I want is a tire size that won't cause excess wear to my axle components and also something that is easy to replace in Africa (we are planning to undertake more trips in the future that will be further afield) so I don't want a tire size that is hard to get hold of.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

PS we are seriously considering buying a Myway serengetti roof tent, the reviews seem excellent and Paul the owner was extremely helpful when I spoke to him. Its all very exciting really!

Hi
Welcome to the forum !

I ran 285/75 R16 on a landcruiser 80, a good size, bigger than the ones you are running now and I believe quite a common size?

The BFG all terrain is very good, another consideration if you want a more aggressive tyre but with good road handling is the Cooper STT as the rocks in Morroco can be harsh..

Hi Stan,

Thanks! I've heard great things about the STT's but aren't they predimonantly a road tire? Thought it might adversly affect MPG, tread wear and road noise more than the BFG AT's.... is this right? I guess its a trade off between that and having better traction offroad.

hi jamin cruiser
I have a lj70 with the 2lt engine its been excellent so far easy to maintain and not too thursty. I have the bfg all terrains 31/10.5r15 and they have lasted along time 40,000 km and still have tread. They love the sand dunes and are great up the wet or dry river beds in Spain. Going bigger might make your 2lt underpowered.
regards jim
here they are on the ebro delta sand dunes and beaches.
