Older trucks on vege oil??

Postby jaybee » Mon Nov 25, 2019 5:51 pm

A friend of mine has an interest in cars that can run successfully on vege oil, for cost savings and the challenge of recycling veg oil! That got me wondering whether older trucks would run successfully on veg oil and whether anyone has tried/knows of people that have? I think there's some tax max on number litres per year - I guess a truck would use them up quicker than a car ;)

What makes older 'non-electronics' vehicles suitable for overland might also make them more suitable to a veg oil conversion?

In a word - yes, if you could be bothered.
I think there was someone who drove an old Merc 508 to India on veg oil

In the overlanding context it's probably fair to say that (depending where you go) obtaining veggie oil in the quantities desired might be, at best, just plain awkward. Also, if you're running a diesel-powered space and / or water heater from the main fuel tank (most do), then they tend to be pretty fussy about fuel quality and veggie oil might quickly lead to furnace malfunction.

For these reasons it's not a hugely popular consideration, even though many older diesel engines would run on it quite happily.

Steve, as always great advice.

With regard to veggie oil my truck would be happy all day on it, but as you stated my Eberspacher would hate it.

Likewise , mercedes say I can add up to 25% petrol to my fuel to stop waxing at cold tempretures.

The Eberspacher would die instantly on this mixture.
I haven't looked into it but fuel anti waxing adatives might be worrying.

Food for thought
