Neil, good point on comparing fuel economy - tend to think all trucks will be similar but clearly this isn't true. Compared to the 8.136 at 8-11mpg it sounds like a T244 will be up around 13-15mpg if driven steadily. Sounds like the TRM 2000 is similar to a T244 based on the figures I can find on websites.

Accept that playing around with the gearing or wheel size can help economy but that is all extra work.

Appreciate terrain, road quality, vehicle weight, etc will affect any figures and all are low compared to a conventional motorhome or van. Even so 14mpg is a lot better than 9mpg.

I have just driven 1800 miles up to Scotland and around the Isle of Sky.

All sorts of speeds, from very slow to just over 50, but mostly at GPS 46 mph and if you ignore using diesel heaters, I got over 13mpg, which I think is brilliant, especially when you consider the forest driving and mountains I encountered.

Plus a lot of stopping to let other drivers pass, one or two that actually said thank you!

Well chuffed.

Obviously in my 1990 T244.

Pete, if you manage to establish any of the major mechanical components of these trucks, then please post details.

If you learn of the makes of gearbox / transfer box / axles / brake chambers (assuming they're air braked?) / any other running gear; then it'd be useful to know.

The more I see of them, the more I like.

I quite like the looks of these. I think that the engine is an MAN and the gearbox might be a ZF unit.
There's quite a few for sale in France and Belgium there's a company in the Netherlands (Whitewood.nl) who have converted a few to Camping Cars. See the attached. Interior space appears a bit cramped but they seem to have everything in.

Sorry I made a mistake according to another site that says the engine is a Renault 3.6ltr.

Details I have been able to find on the mechanicals:

Developed from a Saviem JK in early 1980's to replace Saviem TP3
Engine: 3.6l 4 cylinder turbo MAN RVI 720SPC (as Bazza says, sites conflict but this is the majority view)
Gearbox: ZF S5 24 / 3 Or ZF S5 42 (not sure on this as translating from a French BB)
SOMA T232 axle/transfer box? (lockable, 50/50 split)
Rockwell portal axles
Wheels 12.5R20 or 335/80R20

Quote from US 4x4 site: "I bought a complete (TRM 2000) truck and an extra rear axle to use the difflock from the extra rear to put in the front which does not have one. The front diff head is identical to the rear with the exception of the lack of diff lock. Brakes are air over hydraulic with a cable operated hand brake via an air operated spring brake actuator. Difflock operation is by an electrical solenoid and positive air pressure. Hubs are 8 stud, sorry no PCD at this stage."

Will keep looking and stretching my memory of French to see what else I can find.

Hmm - not sure what's happened - this may come up 3 times...

Anyway, Pete - have you seen this link:

Yes, the military-today website gives a good overview of most trucks and has been an exciting read for me (I don't get out much!). I know this site talks about the TRM using a Renault engine but I suspect it could have been a MAN engine with a sticker over the maker's name. :D

Good info, thanks.

This site's probably been unearthed already but this chap seems to have a good handle on them:

http://www.negoservices86.fr/essai-t2.htm

I could easily be persuaded to build on one of these.
