Radios, talking music guys

Postby sparks101 » Sat Jun 08, 2019 4:59 pm

Guys, bit of advice if i can. I have two music stereos in the truck, both are the standard vehicle type with bluetooth etc, and both suffer from very poor reception.
I have changed to aerials of each and now have power boosted aerials. They are both well earthed to the body. The radios are also earthed to the chassis.
When stationary I can usually get Radio 2 and some other "strong" signals, but little else. When moving the cab stereo is very poor.

I have today installed a digital DAB receiver that connects directly to the radios and should provide the digital radio channels. When switched on it receives a couple of channels very poorly and the signal strength is poor.

Something must be affecting all these items but I cannot work it out. I live inside the M25 so should get a good signal. Anybody else, with a DAF, had this issue and overcome it ??? Any other thoughts welcome.

Cheers
Andy

It's a total punt on my part but I might try taking a wire from the aerial 'ground' point and a wire from the radio's chassis directly back to the -ve terminal of the DC-DC connector that you're presumably using to power the radio and any other 12V stuff in the cab.

As I say, it's a total punt but probably worth mocking up to see if it has any effect.

Cheers Steve, basically I have a bolt that goes through the cab shell and my earths are all attached to it. The aerial is bolted to the roof rack which, in turn, is bolted to the cab! should be ok, but i follow what you are saying, it's worth a try.
The DAB aerial is grounded with a magnetic plate onto the cab as per manufacturers instructions. I will try and earth that with a wire, see what happens.

Do all the other DAF owners have radios in their cabs? any problems ?

cheers Andy

I see no reason why you should have any problems with the installation, but have a nagging doubt that the converter could be the source of the poor performance.

Also, does it make any difference if you physically move the head unit? - it could be that it's affected by emf fields from other equipment.

Both, I think, are worth a quick try.

Hope it works out.
