Hi,
I feel that I may have cheated somewhat but due to lack of time and various other factors Lorraine and I have sourced an Overlander to buy rather than to go down the self build route.
Thanks very much for the advice supplied so far by a couple of members on the forum via PM's, visits and phone calls etc.
I've read most of the previous posts on insurance to get as much info as possible.
So far I've had a reasonable offer from the NFU, however, they do not offer recovery.
Can anyone recommend an independent recovery package, vehicle is a DAF T244, Ed Perry build, currently plated at 7.5T (may be subject to change when I get it home)?
This is really only for European recovery from motorways and busy main roads which in terms of safety etc I consider a must have.
Any advice gratefully received.
Regards,
Wadders

Re: Overlander Recovery
Notwithstanding previous discussions about Adrian Flux, i am insured with them including the breakdown cover from Red Star. They've recovered me twice in the uk without question and very efficiently. It includes European cover which i haven't yet used. I looked into getting the Red Star cover separately but it's only provided to insurers to package with their vehicle policy.
As to the actual vehicle policy I've not had to call on this but I had several vehicles with them and due to some pretty sharp premium increases on those cars I cancelled renewal with them.
They quoted me a massive increase when I changed a 2001 CRV for a 2004 model so I said goodbye to that offer.
The truck hasn't gone up much at all and i need the breakdown cover so that's still with them.
Regards
John

Neil,
No its not the Lorrywaydown of Vince and Jacs. Similar though.
Thanks for the info re: RAC, I'll look into them now.
John,
thanks very much for the info. I have not approached AF mainly due to bad press but they are becoming more attractive with the ability to package recovery in their deal. I'm going to ring them tomorrow.
In the defence of AF, I have previously had a competition vehicle insured with them and they were very good on a claim.

Re: Overlander Recovery
I had the RAC for a year a few years back. When I came to renew they said they couldn't/wouldn't because of the age of the truck! Back with AF now, had a breakdown in summer and they sent someone straight out.
The fitter who came out (In a VW Transporter) was somewhat sceptical that AF would finance a full recovery, so good to see Johns posting .
cheers

Re: Overlander Recovery
i think if you go directly to the RAC they have a restrictive criteria.
However, if you join the Caravan Club they have a deal with the RAC that gets it cheaper ( covers the joining fees ) and the criteri for cover through them is more relaxed.
We just cancelled ours last year as we left the UK and our truck was 29 years old.
Plus you get to go to Caravan club rallys wearing your new anorak

Re: Overlander Recovery
Before we set off on a trip a few years ago I specifically rang AF who were my insurer at that time and asked them if their recovery package included all of Scandinavia. They assured me that every country included in my European insurance cover meant recovery applied to that country also.
We had a breakdown in Finland (the infamous T244 push-fit fuel-pipe fittings) so I rang AF to arrange recovery to a garage for new fuel pipes to be made only to be told Finland was excluded from breakdown cover.
I explained I'd specifically rung beforehand to make sure the country was included: they couldn't have cared less.
We don't bother with recovery options anymore.

Re: Overlander Recovery
Just for info:
Insured now with NFU.
Already had membership with the camping and caravan club so opted for the RAC arrival with recovery in all 49 European countries. No height weight length restrictions etc.
Proof of the pudding, as we know, is when you make the first phone call though.
Hopefully it will never be required. But for the first year, as we travel through Europe (on the way to dipping our toes into Morocco), it does give a little peace of mind.
