Swapping Axles

Postby Reece » Tue May 01, 2018 6:17 pm

So I'm learning about axles now. My Dodge Renault S75 rear differential isn't working so well and I can't find a replacement that would fit - the diff is discontinued and the axle maker is unknown - and the axles from breakers yards aren't an exact match for ratios. I think the axle ratio is important as the truck is a 4x4.

So I'm thinking of looking at an off-the-shelf, BNWT replacement axle, like a Spicer 17060 D (with a No Spin Detroit Locker). So far I gather that I need to consider the ratio, the gross axle weight. I assume I'd need to get new suspension mounts welded on for the leaf springs and shocks. I am not sure what else, though I'm sure there are some considerations about the hand brake system, brakes, wheels etc.

Has anyone done this or know anyone who has? Any ideas what I need to take account of, or customisations needed, or who can do all this stuff? Thanks!

Hi Reece I hear very good reports from http://www.hlsmith.co.uk/default.aspx. They can repair and replace transmission parts. It may be a more workable solution than replacing the lot.

Thanks Phil - I'll see what they can do. Since the axle & differential housing are specific to Dodge Trucks (as far as I can tell) and the manufacturer and technical details and dimensions are unavailable, and the differential is obsolete, I've had no luck so far with finding a suitable diff to go in there.

If you still struggle PM me as I know a guy who has had the van version of your truck for many years and may be able to help.

Did you ever find 'John' referred to in the post at the link?

He reportedly had loads of transmission parts for Dodge 50s / RBs.

Hi Steve, yes I met him at the overland show but I think his name is Dave. I've tried him but not heard back yet...

Ah, very sorry about the name mixup. He definitely told me he had full transmission trains as spares - whatever his name.

Good luck with the transplant if you can't locate the original stuff.

So I managed to totally avoid doing this by finding an axle that had been sitting in a hedge for a decade or so, and swapping out the diff.
In principle I don't think it would have been that hard - a bit of fabricating and welding - but I couldn't find a welding/engineering place with big enough doors to get the truck in. Or at least, not in a decent time frame.
In a way, I'm glad there wasn't a more exciting or impressive end to this story.
