So, having more or less achieved my current 5 year plan of getting my Leyland daf t244 ont road, it's time for the next plan!

Anyone got a handle on how much it is to get a truck from the uk to Iceland ? I know that it's reckoned to be pretty expensive once your there but what is the route - via Scandinavia or Faroes?

Just been looking at :

https://youtu.be/rQt_G1AAjZs

And it looks my sort of place.

Access will be from NE England/Scotland as we would start from Cumbria.

Cheers muchly

To go on a passenger ship as opposed to freight you'll need to go from Hirtshals in the north of Denmark. Getting to Denmark in the first place is not so easy nowadays as there's no direct UK / Scandinavia passenger ferry anymore and it will probably mean a drive up through Netherlands and Germany.

Trip details here: http://triptruck.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/2014%20-%20Iceland

Smyril Line here: http://www.smyrilline.com/destinations/faroe-islands?gclid=Cj0KCQiAkNfSBRCSARIsAL-u3X-QQ0sls4i_t819b447nMMO9b_qfq3BxVyskUYNu2Uqao0P0gK7ImYaArOrEALw_wcB

Great post Mr Crinkles, I'll have a good poke around that blog.

I wonder if there is a shipping route out to scandanavia? Or Iceland and go foot passenger via ferries. Long way up from Hamburg.

I'll give smyrilline a ring cos they're website won't give me what I want.

There are freight shipping routes, yes. One interesting one is a DFDS service from Immingham to Brevik in southern Norway where - if you book early enough - they will allow a handful of foot passenger to accompany their 'freight'. You could then easily sail from Norway to Hirtshals.

It's expensive though and works out dearer than driving to Harwich, taking the Hook of Holland ferry and then driving up through Germany.

We've done the Harwich-HoH trip for the last two years but then to / from Travemunde in northern Germany rather than Denmark. It's a pretty easy drive to Denmark and if you take an overnight ferry from Harwich-HoH you could fairly comfortably get from Cumbria to Hirtshals with three full days at the wheel at T244 speeds.

We've looked at a few different possibilities to return to Iceland but unless you have a ton of time and can wait for freight shipping / fly to Iceland you're prety much stuck with Smyril Line and MS Norröna .

One tip that may still hold good, if you stop off at the Faroes and wait for the next sailing of the Norröna (usually means 3 days on the Islands) you can save about £300. Smyril is a Faroese company and it seems they offer this incentive to increase their tourist income.

Many thanks crinkly, great info!

I'll do some research into all this and post results back on here. Something that it all throws up is how bleeding awful my geography of northern (all of) Europe is! I have no handle on the relative distances of uk - Germany say, or Cumbria to Newcastle relative to Germany to Denmark

Also, to my shame, I don't know where Harwich is!

Time to get the maps and google out.

Update: Harwich 350 miles south of Cockermouth near Felixstowe. I'd be better off Newcastle to Hamburg.

Plenty of time for all this, five year plan. Immediate journeys is round Lake District (literally on our doorstep) and Hebrides (which are about three hours above where I had to go to get MOTed! :D

Ahem! it's about 350 miles from Longtown to John O Groats so 3 hours might be a bit optimistic! :D :D
When we come off the boat in Cairnryan, once we hit Tebay on the M6 I reckon we're about equi-distant from the north of Scotland and the south of England

I was thinking more Oban and Skye type Hebrides Ivan, and Ok aa route finder says 219 miles 4hrs 26 mins sooooo, about three hours! :D

There is a sign outside haltwhistle that says it's the centre of Britain so Tebay is maybe 30 miles south of centre. Best services in England mind.

Where do you go to from Cainryan?

Aye, we'll not split hairs :D
From Cairnryan? Boat to Belfast or Larne and then home to the Glens of Antrim

I've come to the conclusion that if I want to explore Iceland I'm best off doing it by bike as I can at least get that on the plane at sensible cost.
If we took the truck it would involve the others flying out and meeting me there with the truck
