Overlander in terminal decline

Postby Rusape » Tue May 07, 2019 7:16 pm

Now I haven't been a member of this site for too long, but it seems in the short time I've been here, the traffic/posts has fallen away quite considerably.

Coupled with Stan's message of last year about selling up, I assume at some stage, not too long now, the site will no longer be hosted and disappear altogether, losing what is a valuable resource.

Has anyone picked up or have plans to pick up the mantle?

I'm not a computer techie and don't have the skills to do this, but as this market is steadily growing not just in the UK but worldwide, there must be potential for this site to attract many more members and traffic, particularly for the heavy truck scene.

What's the general consensus?

I'm not holding up much hope for any replies to this , for the above reasons, but I thought I'd enquire anyway.

A point well raised thank you

This is a big concern, that several of us have discussed before.

Like you non of us a techie enough to take on the roll.

The easiest solution is to jump to facebook when the time comes.

This I don't like as firstly all the fantastic information on here will certainly be lost and secondly facebook is great for discussing the here and now but not good for cataloguing information or searching.

Zolton once spoke of the possibility of having our own dedicated section on the Russian forum . This could be an option but whether all this info can be migrated over i dont know.

I think it's best to consider the options at this stage.

Stan has moved on to a new life ( and we wish him well with his move ) bit I think it is inevitable that st some stage this forum will cease to be.

Thoughts folks

Neil

Having thought about this, I will speak to the owner of the Land cruiser club.net and see if he is prepared to migrate this to that forum, which is extremely healthy and one of the best forums I've come across.

Including a heavy truck section in there would be great and the resources could be saved.

Nor sure if it's possible, or even of he would be willing to do so.... but you never know.

I'll revert once I've spoken to him.

As Neil has said, we have discussed the future of this forum on many occasions, but I think the biggest problem in keeping it going is simply down to cost, you have to pay to run a forum like this.... or so I am told.

I would like to see the whole forum continue as it is, not piggy-backing on another forum, but am willing to go with the flow as I think this forum and members are second to none, and I would not wish under any circumstances to see the information lost, I am still directing new members here!!!!

So come on Dear members, let us get this sorted ASAP, if we have to pay to keep it, so be it.....

B.

Point very well made Laurence, there is lots of good info on here and I can’t help but think if we had a good stable future on a safe platform the group could build up again. As you said our hobby is of growing interest out there in the real world.

I may have solution to this by hosting the forum as a stand alone site.

If I get this re-hosted,(my cost) I would want to change and improve the site considerably, newer software, better search facility etc etc.

If you guys are all happy and in agreement with this as a solution so we don't lose the resource, then please let me know. If you don't think this is a good idea, or you have any other solution, then again please shout.

I have emailed STAN to discuss what he wants or intends to do. Ultimately it is his site and his decision.

The only other forum that i have direct involvement with is the Russian military truck forum. We have so far existed in donations to keep that afloat as we have costs each year approaching £200 for hosting and band width and for someone to oversee the technical side. Every so often we have to plead for donations which are slow in coming
Stan, as far as i am aware was hoping to sell his Overland parts business with the active forum. I don't know if he has made any progress in finding a buyer, not the easiest thing to sell on.
Facebook as any kind of archive of information is a waste of time and the way the algorithm works, not all members will see all posts.
Bottom line is we'll have to run this forum on donations and for whoever it is that takes over the reins it will be forever hand to mouth hoping there are enough funds available to meet annual costs when they fall due

In my opinion I think this is the only way to go, we need someone with an interest in our hobby to get hold of the site and move it forward. Once you have invested the money you have the motivation to move things forward.

I have made donation to this site before, and I am prepared to do it again, bearing in mind I have a truck to afford, as I do not want to see the forum get lost.

You get my vote Rusape!

Others?

Ok, I've had an initial exchange of emails with Stan and I will be meeting up with him soon to discuss a way forward.

No guarantees, but its progress in the right direction.
