Approaching the final stage of completing our “go anywhere” adventure truck.
Our plan is to build a vehicle capable of housing us as we travel through Africa supporting our charity work and adventure travel plans.
The basic layout is a 5.1m x 2.5m box accommodation giving 5 berths, bathroom, kitchen etc. To enable us to stay under the 7.5 ton vehicle limit we have opted for foam core laminate construction. Ed Perry from Overland Vehicles has been very creative and suggested we use a laminate of GRP honeycomb and foam core. The result is very strong and light with excellent insulation. – well done Ed!
Our specifications include, long range fuel and water tanks, Air conditioning, 240/12V Generator, large capacity batteries, 3kW- 24V to 240V inverter. Ed has been very creative again and built an electrical system that allows us to run all equipment (including the air-con) from either the engine, generator, batteries or external 240V supply.
To enable us to explore more inaccessible destinations we have included a quad bike and an inflatable boat with a 20hp outboard. This will be transported in an external “pod” which is hung from the back of the truck.
We chose Overland vehicles for the build because of Ed’s positive can do approach, also because he was happy to build a bespoke vehicle to our design.
Delivery should be approximately mid June 2011
We are planning a few shakedown trips this summer and a North Africa adventure early 2012. Our plans for a longer trip are not yet firm as we have several options to consider.
Off for painting today, Ed had done a great job with the roof rack - check out the new photos.
What made you choose this one?
We chose the Daf for its fantastic value, incredible off road ability and mechanical simplicity. Also the Cummins engine is simple, very widely used and can cope with the high sulphur diesel found in 3rd world locations. We considered various Man or Mercedes vehicles but found them either too small, expensive or complicated.
